NAPPI uk’s approach to CPD: A never-ending journey of self-fulfilment

Upping the skills of employees is the key to a motivated team and a buoyant business.

The ethos lies at the heart of NAPPI uk’s culture through a Continuing Professional Development programme that seeks to help all professional trainers reach their full potential.

Director of education Andy Skinner said: “Some businesses may fear developing staff because they will gain skills then leave. That may happen in some cases, but generally if a company helps staff it is a win-win for the individual and the business.

“Staff will be more motivated, feel valued and fulfilled, and contribute more to the business that invested in them by coming up with ideas.

“For the company it also boosts staff morale, reduces absence and sickness and increases staff retention levels which provides more continuity for clients,” he explained.

Andy stressed that CPD is a joint commitment by the individual and the company. For NAPPI uk this ensures at least 70 hours a year of training observations and CPD opportunities, as well as qualifications in teaching, assessing and IQA. It goes above and beyond the requirements of RRN training standards.

Sessions for the NAPPI uk training team range from an annual two-day motivational workshop event, to quarterly video conferences, reviews of specific skills, and monthly briefings picking up on issues in the media.

Regular staff assessment from annual appraisals to informal supervision also highlight scope for gaining new qualifications.

“People develop at different paces, depending on where they are on the CPD journey and how they learn. But we know it is working due to annual self-reflection where staff say how well they could deliver training on module and skills and how long it would take to prepare for a session. We can see how they are progressing,” said Andy.

“CPD is not a tick box sheet to be filled it. It is a journey – but a never-ending one because once we reach a milestone we must look ahead to the next,” he added.
